On the morning of October 27, the International conference “From the Port to the World: A Global History of Indochinese Ports (1858-1956)” took place at the University of Danang - University of Science and Education (UD -UED).

The International Conference “From the Port to the World: A Global History of Indochinese Ports (1858-1956)” is a scientific forum gathering leading scientists, researchers from France, the United States, Germany, Canada, Norway, China, Japan and Vietnam. It was co-organized by UD-UED and Southern Brittany University (Université Bretagne Sud -UBS) (France). Besides, there were also partners: Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam (DAV); University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University Hanoi (VNU – USSH); Le Havre Normandie University (France); the University of Paris (France); Institute of Asian Studies, Aix-Marseille University (IrASIA, AMU) (France); the Francophone University Association (AUF) (France); French School of Asian Studies (EFEO) (France); CoolieBrokers Research Program, the University of Paris (France); French Military History Research Program (France); French Academic Network for Asian Studies - Scientific Interest Group (GIS ASIE) (France); Overseas Academy of Sciences (Académie des sciences d'Outre-Mer).

Conference participants
The conference creates an opportunity to study the global history of seaports and colonial Indochinese ports, building a research archive on maritime and port topics from an interdisciplinary approach. Especially, in the current context when sea trade is constantly increasing and export activities become the main development lever for the Southeast Asian economy in general and Vietnam’s economy in particular, the study of History can open up the opportunity to assess the current opportunities and challenges for marine trade activities such as port infrastructure, strategic location or regional economic development and position in the period of trade globalization.

At the conference, Assoc.Prof.Dr. Luu Trang, Rector of the University said that "Considered as special places of the "Naval Empire", the ports were an important fulcrum during the French colonization of Indochina. Indochinese ports are considered as "Marks" of the colonization process. The ports and port cities in the colonies are ideal places to observe and analyze the transformation and change of indigenous society in the face of exposure to new factors and the birth of society with many interference elements and related to world connection. Therefore, the Indochinese ports are absolutely a research topic that can be applied to any connection scale…

Professional and thoughtful organization
The conference focused on 3 goals:
First, to fill in the research gap on colonial ports;
Second, to apply the globalization approach to Indochinese ports, in the same way that Bruno Marnot has applied to the major commercial ports of France;
Third, to connect historians and researchers in a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary approach.

The conference took place for 03 days from October 27 to October 29, 2022 with 3 committees. There were 10 Workshops with 70 reports.
